I am new to BMW X5, I have one question?

Hi ! I just picked up my first BMW, it is a 2003 X5 3.0 with 36k miles.
My first question is: is it normal if I drive the car without warm-up in the cold morning, the first 5-10 seconds the car feels driving with no power or without 1st gear!! If I warm-up the car for 3-5 mintues, the car drives like normal !!!!

As with any vehicle, you want to give the engine a chance to warm up, coat the crankcase with oil, etc, before stressing it. This is important in any weather, but particularly important in cold weather. Give her some time to warm up and she will respond by driving better. And you will prolong the live of your car, too.

The 3-5 minutes is too long for a warm up, so I would have it checked out. The cold shouldn't be a factor in NYC this time of year.

Welcome Jumbosushi! No motor will function to its full potential until reaching operating temperature. Modern day fuel injections and engine management systems add a richer mixture (like a choke on a carburettor would) while the engine is warming up. You will probably find that yours is overfuelling a bit at start up OR its not seeing the colder start up temperature and not compensating for it. My 2 cents worth.

BMW's don't need to be warmed up. Just don't nail it until you get to normal operating Temp. Just sitting to warm up doesn't allow the oil to flow correctly.....Phil

Read the manual. The engine gets heated faster if you drive right away then sitting in cold for few minutes. Cars these days do not need to be warmed up by sitting, you need to drive-off to warm-up. Although several car owners still sit in parking lots warming their cars because they never read the manual.
