Are all BMW 3.0 liter engines the same?

I want to add some zip to my 2004 X5 3.0i but there is nothing available that I can find except the air intakes and expensive exhaust systems that do not do much. My question is why can’t I use the ECM programmers, headers, turbos, etc from the BMW 3 series that have the same basic engine? Is the X5 3.0i engine that different from the engines in the 328 and 335 series? Those engines have tons of mods available. If there is no real difference then why isn’t anyone exploring those options? My BMW dealer says there is no compatibility but I do not believe it. Any thoughts?

the one in the X5 is the same as all 2001 - 2005 e46 3.0 inlines and the 2006 330ci

other than that...they're not the same

Well, there is a new supercharger system coming out for the E53 X5 3.0i by ESS Tuning using a new type of twin-screw supercharger.

My old neighbor who had a pair of 53xs, one of which he engine swapped with an inline 6 from an M3 explained, to me once the subtle differences between the inline 6 engines of that same time era. There are just enough to make engine swaps very arduous between them, but it is technically the same engine. The upper intakes vary, for example. It is kind of a crap shoot.

This M3 engine he dropped in looked like it was supposed to be there, but he had to do a ton of supplementary things like the radiator, the fans, and a lot of electronics to get it to work properly. But it did work.

The answer is they are not just straight bolton, but you could make them work if you had the desire and knowhow, and were not afraid of being out of warranty. Most people get stopped by one or the other.

Personally I think a turbo setup would be pretty easy to do on the I6. There is plenty of room in that engine bay, and the stock manifolds merge reasonably close to the heads.
