Windshield replacement

Yesterday a rock hit my windshield on my 06 X5, called insurance but they only recommend Safelite, they told me if I go to the dealer I would have to pay for the difference that is around $600.00. Should I go with and aftermarket or pay for factory?

I just had my factory windshield replaced last week. Most replacement glass is made by the same maunfacturer as the OEM glass, so I personally went with the "aftermarket" version to avoid the extra costs. So far no complaints.

Well, for more info read my extensive windshield post.

But in a nut shell...The dealer wanted $1,400. I went to the local glass company and was charged $600 and change. Want to know the best part?? They do all of BMW's installs here in Ft Lauderdale!! I asked that they utilize OEM glass and that was not a problem.

You may want to purchase the comfort glass. It has a slight tint to it.

The huge difference?? Greed and ill informed south Florida customers with lots of $$$ who will pay that amount. Mine was actually covered with a zero deductible too!

Thank You for the comments, the BMW replacement is $486.00 but they want $700.00 for installation the aftermarket is $600.00 all together, I think I’ll ask Safelite to use the Original BMW and will pay the difference instead of going to the dealer.

Did you consider this?

If you don't and drive with the freshly installed windshield it will flex and move and result in an imperfect seal, hence your whistling noise. There shouldn't be any whistling coming from your windshield.

In Florida, there is a law that insurance has to cover all windshield repairs and replacements at no cost to the customer (no deductible), as a safety issue. Of course, the companies make up for it by increased premiums! Anyway, I have a small rock chip in my windshield, and will get the windshield fixed soon, because it will cost me nothing. If I had to pay for it, I would leave it alone.
