Coolant smell

Looking at a 2001 X5 3.0 in otherwise good condition, I noticed a faint coolant burning smell after a vigorous test drive.
is this likely to be a minor leak, or a sign of a failed radiator etc (and so a signel to keep walking)
Thanks

As all the X5's suffer from weak cooling system components I would want a complete system check before purchase.
The water pump, thermostat and thermostat housing along with all the hoses should be checked as well as the radiator and tank.
