New Member and question...

Hi everyone,

I have been lurking for a bit and decided to make the plunge on an X5 for the Wife... she has been driving a tired old audi A6 for about 7 years and I wanted to suprise her w/ a "new" car.

Anyway, after looking on this board for about a month, I am looking to move on a 02 3.0 X5 from a local stealership (yea was looking at the ML series) Wanted to ask if 15,900 is as screamin deal as I think it might be, it's clean, and got 85K miles. a few light hickies here and there, and they are replacing the instrument cluster, brakes (all 4) and doing all the fluids?

As far as the dealership it's a Merc dealership so I feel pretty confident that that will want to at the least be carefull and not sell a piece of junk.

Also, is there any nit-noid things I need to be concerned about?

Thanks for reading, and appreciate this site! this is COOL!

i would guess that you're looking at an automatic. don't get the '02 5-speed manual. i have one and it sucks. gears are way too low and the dual-mass flywheel is a nightmare.

Yea, it's an Auto, w/the slide it over and play with the gears option.

Thanks for the heads up though.

normal used car advice but do a carfax. Also, I'd get the VIN and ask a BMW dealership for service records. So you can see what kind of work has been done on it already. If the ink runs out while printing, you might want to rethink!! welcome though.

Exactly..but the price seems to be about right..It's not out of the ordinary or anything..Maybe try to bargain down a little more but it sounds about right.

Oh and one more thing..try to see if they'll put new Cv boots on too..That's about the mileage that they tear...They're probably on their way to tearing soon...good luck!!

Already mentioned the CV boot thing, the MB mechanic is putting it on the lift today and doing an inspection, I am invited to go over when its up in the air and take a look myself,

And they showed me the print out from the Beemer ship in town when they ordered the cluster.

I appreciate the re-enforsement though.

1st) Welcome!

personally, I'd look for a 4.4 vs a 3.0 - the 4.4 will actually get you better mileage and being out west, you want the power to accelerate to & cruise at 75+mph (not to mention climbing the mountains) - just a thought

Actually I thought about the 4.3, but after I looked under the hood the the I-6 I was sold, it brought back memories of the Supra I had, and an old 330I I had in Germany back in the day.

Super easy to work on, and lots of low end long stroke grunt.

But you are probably right, as heavy as the X is, the 3 lt. will work harder.

We will see, the test drive, I was pretty happy with, but remember I'm one of those few out there, that isnt performance modding too much, I think it's cool, but I dont do it myself.

And an update: I bought it! plan to do the pick up tomorrow morning for the Wife!, Big Bow and all.
