Thanks in advance.

What exactly do you mean by 'Front end?' In order to convert to the newer bodystyle look of the 2004, you need to change the hood, both front fenders, complete bumper, grill, headlights, foglights etc. If you have all the parts, YES it can be done. THere are also some minor modifications that need to be done such as the wiring for the lights. The new headlights are bi-xenons with different connectors which will require fabricating a new harness. There should be a post in the article section by someone who has done this facelift...

It will fit if you plan to replace the hood, fenders and headlight assemblies

no you have to change the entire front end not just the bumper if you go with the 4.8 front end.
But if you want it to look like a 4.6 or 4.8. Just add the lower front bumper spoiler the 4.6 comes with. the 4.6 bumber looks almost identical to the 4.8 bumper. the only diff is the 4.8 bumper and spoiler is one piece and the 4.6 bumper and spoiler are 2 pieces.

the only thing why the entire front has to be change is because of the small different in the shape of the lights.

No, it will not fit, but you can fit a 4.6 bunper. The front body style changed on post 2003 X5s with slightly different hood, fenders, grill, bumper, lights, etc.
