full speed rear wiper?

I survived the ice storm in OKC then drove to eastern TN yesterday. On the last stretch, the rain and fog were heavy enough for cars to pull off the freeway.

I realized that the rear wiper would not stay in motion but would wipe maybe every 30 seconds. It has been so long that I've been in a heavy rain with my 04 X5 4.4i that I didn't remember what to do.

When I reached my destination, I looked at the manual (p.67) but it leaves me confused about how to keep the rear wiper on motion unless I am moving in reverse.

So what am I forgetting?

Doesn't look like that's an option but you can make the intermittent faster by moving the stalk quickly between positions 0 and 1 and then doing it again at the intermittent interval you'd like.

the rear is programmable. jimbeattie is saying that you can set the interval by turning it on then immediately off. then on again after the delay you want, i.e. if you wait 3 secs to turn it on again, your interval will be set at 3 secs. this will stay this way until you change it again even after turning off the car.

Okay, what you're saying makes sense and clarifies what was fuzzy for me in the manual. So I'm sure I'll get it right in the next deluge.

The only thing is I thought the manual said you could change it back to default by turning off engine or just turn off the rear wiper and 10 seconds later it is back to default. That's the way page 69 looks to me but it sounds like your experience is different.

Thanks UncleBob, much more eloquent.

We got a foot and a half of snow today so I got the chance to try out the back wiper, it worked just as it says in the book, a quick flick on and off then on again at the interval you want (who dreams these things up I wonder). I had it going pretty well constantly and then did the switch thing again and slowed it down. I don't know what it'll be like the next time I start it, I'll have to dig the truck out first.

It's a good trick to know the next time it's inclement (or rains alot)
