X5 wont start..Please Help!

Hi all, My 2001 X5 wont start?

All the lights on the dash come on fine, and the headlights are nice and bright, the starter doesn't even turn over? Also the gearshift doesnt feel right seems loose and when in Park you can still push the car baack and forward?

Possibly the key fob / immobiliser? Anyone know how to take key fob apart without causing too much damage?

Any help would be appreciated tonight because im stuck at work!

Thanks in advance

Mike.

There is an interlock in the gearshift so that you can only start when in Park or Neutral. If there is a problem in the linkage (and it sounds like there is) then that interlock may be preventing the starter from getting power.

Try moving the gear selector back and forth while turning the key, you may find a spot where it works to start. Then, book an appointment at your dealer or independent mechanic to have it looked at.

Good Luck.

If you are stranded, you can probably reach under the car and index the transmission lever manually. MAKE SURE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE IS ON!

It's located under the car on the drivers side, just about directly under the gearshift lever. Use extreme caution and KEEP THE EMERGENCY BRAKE ON!
