Mine has "become inactive" a couple times as well. If I turn it off, restart it seems to be ok. I think the best you can do is wait it out till monday when it will warm up and things should go back to normal. I have an E39 that has needed one rear bag and I was lax in doing it. It is also riding like your old p/u! That project has jumped to top of the list. This weather is beating up everything. Sick of it

Fill, there is a relay in the compressor enclosure in the spare tire well. I just figured my issue out on my wagon. These are basically the same systems on the E39 and the E53. See my thread here. https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...air-suspension
I figured out that once the code was set, which you can tell if the warning comes on as soon as you start the car instead of a delay, than you have to clear it before the pump will come back on. With the warmer temps we are having, you should be able to this resolved.

As the cold snap hit here in North Texas, I was bitten by the Self Level Inactive fault code immediately on start up and it will not clear. My heights are OK and all my sensors appear to be intact.

What a PITA this self level system is, just going into faults for no reason! I have a suspicion that maybe the IBUS app has something to do with it???? Seems like when the IBUS app went a little off the rails (not giving me fog lights during DRL) is when the Self Level Inactive popped up. This coincided with the cold snap so I can't be sure which one is related or neither.

I am going to try this Creator 310 scanner tool as it looks a lot simpler than configuring the INPA coding software on an XP laptop.

Unless someone knows of an Android app that can do the same functions with an OBDII WiFi scanner module.

PS: I scored a Creator 310 V7.2 Scan Tool for $40 Best Offer

Just from looking at the DIS menu it looks like the system can shut itself off if it senses a problem so that it doesn't cause further harm. I think mine is in safe mode now. Hopefully I can connect to the EHC module soon and perform a reset.

You guys with problems, what code are you getting? Mine is 118. Don't think it's cold related as mine gave me an issue after it was parked in a heated garage for 4 days.

Your X what?...3.0/4.4/4.6is/4.8is? You left no model/model year/build date nor which suspension system you have.

Remember to help us help you better by leaving enough information about your vehicle that we know what it is and how it may be optioned.

The e53 X5 has two different self leveling suspension...there's a rear axle only (EHC I) and a dual axle self leveling system (EHC II). There is nothing you can "add" to the system...since there's no reservoir to open and add anything.

Since we don't know your model or which system...here's info on both types below:
