Arrow 2001 X5: 4.4 battery in a 3.0

I am going to pick up a new battery for my 2001 3.0 X5 tomorrow. In reading online, I see that the 4.4 has a bigger battery than the 3.0. Looking at the batter in my 3.0, I see that there is plenty of room for a wider battery.

Can I buy the battery for the 4.4 and put it in my 3.0? Is this a good idea?

Also, what is in the big heavy round thing that is under the spare tire and over the battery?

it fits no problem. i did it.
the only advantage is more power reserve. that won't do anything for you under normal circumstances like just starting the car. but it will let you use accessories longer without draining the battery.

Glad you found us. Your going to enjoy it for sure. Perhaps though a suggestion is in order.
Check the home page and you will find a ton
of information about your vehicle. Much of it in the manual. Other articles
deal with mods and a rash of other FAQ that will satisfy your thirst
for knowledge regarding your vehicle. Take a few minutes grab
a beverage and check out that home page. I think you will be
encouraged by what you will find.

Here is a very good posting on battery replacement. The big black thing is for the suspension levelling, see the posting for how to move it out of the way.
