Windshield Wiper Control Unit

I have an 2001 X-5, 3.0 that has a problem with the control unit for the wipers. It works on the continuous mode; it works on the click mode for one swipe but does not work in the variable time mode. I'm guessing that it is due for a new unit....I'm also guessing it's very expensive and hard to do.....no? I've never even found the item on a parts link, let alone the cost. Onyone have any insight / help? Thanx

Sure it's not 'rain activated'?

When you switch to intermittent, what happens if you then move the adjustment thumbwheel? Do you get a 'sweep' of the wipers or nothing?

On my X3, when I switch to 'intermittent', nothing happens unless it rains (and the thumbwheel adjusts sensitivity not wipe frequency, though the one is a function of the other) or I twiddle the thumbwheel which forces a wipe.
