HELP-HAPPEN TO ANYONE ELSE

Well, last night I was thrilled that Burdicks had fixed the thumping brake problem. This morning they took it out for a test ride and the brake pedal went down to the floor. It seems that the rear brake line is corroded all of a sudden. They said where it bends up over the rear axle, salt and debris accumulate over the bend at the frame rail. I asked them how common this was and they said that they have seen it before at 70,000 miles. Bad news is that they have to hand bend the lines and BMW does not carry them, they have to get them locally for big bucks!!! For replacing 2 of them they say $1300 parts and labor. Does this situation sound unusual to the rest of you with higher mileage X-5's? He is call corporate to see if they will contribute to the cause.

although i can't be 100% it sounds suspicious to me that bmw does not supply parts for its cars. check and see if you can find the part here:

parts catalog

$1,300 sounds quite high to me for that job which could be a DIY.

it does sounds fishy !

maybe the lines had air and they wanto to do extra work to me some extra money! but $ 1300 to change those lines

DrFred...I tend to agree with posters above. I haven't done a brake
line R & R in a couple decades, but I can't imagine that even if they
really have to hand bend them on a tube bending machine, that it
can be a $1300 + job, imo. And, I thought most Teuton cars used
Bundaflex tubing for hydraulic brake lines, which is quite bendable
almost by hand or, using a simple "turn".

What a coincidence that the Stlr does a "free brake job" and then
the line(s) is shot?! I smell a cover up for a botched job, the first
time or..."corroded" brake lines on a fairly recent vintage X5??? WTF?!

Looking forward to reading the successful outcome, but I'd say they
are twisting your pud.

Thanks for the link. I called the dealer late in the afternoon and corporate had not gotten back to him yet. I mentioned to the service manager that I participate in several X5 message boards and that the general consensus was that the price is ridiculous. I had your link on my screen and started giving him prices displayed which are quite low. How could he tell me that BMW does not have parts for the brake lines and that they have to do it custom localally when your link displays everything? Something fishy?

they push it. If it works then they make money. If it doesn't, they move to the next customer. Not everybody knows where to look for cheap parts. Some end paying the hefty price
