Trans failsafe

I would like to say I am a long time BMW fan. This is my 4th but I think this will be the one to kill me. Id like to say thanks for the help I have had so far and for the replies I will get. Now to the jist of the problem.

My 01 4.4 has 83k on it and driving dow nthe raod all the sudden the Failsafe light comes on along with check engine, the Xmas tree with ABs and the speedo goes dead?

I pulled the code and it looks like p1743 which sais its the E servo. If it is trully a servo then I can handle that. I rebuilt 2 bmw auto's and several clutches. But the Speedo going dead tells me its something else like a short or a bad harness. Let me know what you think.

Thanks

I believe I have read that this assortment of lights is usually caused by the alternator or battery taking a dump, so I'd search those topics for symptoms.

My mistake, the code was p1747 and its for the CAN bus monitoring? loose connection maybe? I have researched back and I saw that there were Alternator issues that caused it to go out of wack but this happens after about 5 miles of driving where a Alternator issue would cause this sooner?

Had that problem with my 99 328i e46. Airbag lite on, tranny lite on, radio's dead, so i did a search at e46fanatics.com and found out that the ignition switch needed replacement. Changed the ignition switch and no more problem. I hope that's what your problem since it's an easy DIY!!

The speed sensor was the wrong one but I put it in and the car made no change. I was driving it to test it out and the Engine Failsafe kicked in along with the Trans failsafe. The coolant gauge pinged to max and the Tach went dead. The weird part is still no battery light coming on but virtually everything in the dash is lighting up or failing. A/c is nice and cold and blowing and the radio still works great.

Battery is putting out 12.3 and alternator is solid 13.9 to 14.2

I had the codes pulled and 4 of them were CAN timeouts and the tech couldn't communicate with the ABS. He thought it was a hard fault like a Fuse but I replaced all the fuses and nothing.

WTH is happening!

Dealer time
