Newbie X5 owner: Can't get CD changer to work

Hi All

I bought a 2001 BMW X5 4.4i Premium Package with 55,000 miles this last weekend. Stumbled on this website and it has so much great info, that I really need to thank all of you guys a lot. My car didnt come with any books/manuals.

My X5 has a CD changer under the armrest for Driver's seat. It loads CDs just fine. However, I am stumped as to how to make it play CDs. When I change mode on the in-dash control, it just switches between the CD loaded in the main unit and radio. Am I missing something here?

One more qn: what are the maintenances I should be doing in the near future?

Thanks in advance.

Regards
JK

That's not a cd changer, its a cd holder. The cd changer (if equipped) is located in the trunk, on the left side (drivers) behind the panel that you open.

:xoutpost: GREAT NEWB question.. - but I'm laughing because when I got my X5, I kind of thought the same thing, and couldnt put CDs in there (original owner decided to put all their change down there so it was all messed up). Over a year later (by this time i knew it was a cd holder) i managed to take it out and get all the coins out and now i'm using it as a CD holder.

If when you press mode you get "CD01-01" then you have the cd changer - i'm pretty sure it will still come up even if there are no CDs in there.

Maint: When I buy a car normally i do oil change top up fluids, have my indie mech check brakes, rotors etc. Just a full inspection. Go to someone you trust so you know what you have to do right away as apposed to something that can wait a little longer.

:xoutpost:

yep, it's a CD holder. under [audio] press the [mode] softkey to switch mediums

and at 60k, inspection II at the dealership is recommended. then proceed from there
