Rattling noise while idling!!!
When I am idling in drive with my foot on the brake pedal, there is an embarrasing rattling noise coming from what sounds like somewhere in the engine compartment. If I put it into neutral or park while keeping my foot on the brake, the noise goes away. Any ideas on how to fix this? |

Mine just came back from the shop and I had a similar issue. Mechanic said it was some plastic piece that had broken - might have been what mrbmwx5 said it was. I will check my receipt and see what he had it listed as.

He did not charge me for it, so it is not on my receipt. I will email him and find out what it was.

While a friend or spouse is in the car simulating the rattle condition, and the emergency brake on, pop the hood and listen. Check under the car too as sound can migrate in strange ways. If I had to guess I'd say a loose heat shield. Good luck

Here is what my mechanic said my issue was:
BMW calls it an “Adjuster” It is a vacuum operated adjustable flap that changes the tuned length of the intake manifold to enhance low RPM torque.
