What's this? (Above Nav drive)

Hi All-

I recentley added a 01 X5 4.4 as my DD to go along with an E36 M3 and wife's 04 X3 3.0. The X5 is loaded with every option minus the sport package. Does anyone know what the silver box above the nav drive is for? Thanks.

did u try to remove it? I think that is something that the previous owner installed. BMW wouldn't do anything that would look like that. How about the CD case? Is that there already as well when you got it?

I haven't tried to pull it. There's definitely a multi wire connector on the back side of the box. The CD case was there when I took delivery of the vehicle. It's full of 2001 & 2003 navigation discs. Anyone know a cheap source for the 2007.2 Disc 5?

My car has the same box - not sure but I think it could be for the mobile phone or voice control unit.

Your Nav system is Mk3 CD (not Mk4 DVD) so make sure you don't get a DVD map disc. Also if the NAV operating sytem has not been updated - definitely update it. This will add better menu graphics, and split screen functionality to your NAV/OBC and a cool "BMW" bootscreen among other benefits. You can do the upgrade yourself for free by downloading the file and burning your own upgrade disc or buy an upgrade disc cheap on ebay. BMW will usually charge $$$ for the upgrade. Read all about it on the NAV FAQ

Thanks Brian. I believe I have the latest nav software as it displays the BMW logo @ startup and reads 3-1/63.

I assumed the silver box could be for the phone. I don't think I have voice control, but haven't researched it. I guess I should pull it and see what I find.

Don't bother pulling it - press and hold the steering wheel phone button - if you have voice control you will hear a beep. Say the word "help" and the system will talk back a list of valid voice commands. See the operating manual.
