How to remove CV axle out of transmission?
I'm planning to replace both CV axles for my X5. Most of articles explain about how to pull out the CV axle out of wheel bearing and replace boots only. I want to know how to pull out the CV axle out of transmission. Do I just need to pry it out or Is there any locking pin? Any comment would be appreciated. |

On most axle you just need to pull as hard as you can so the locking ring unlock but I'm not absolutely sure on the X5. I also need to replace CV boot next week-end so if your not that in a hurry wait a week and I'll tell you exactly how to do it.

Use a pry bar behind the metal half shaft cup and it should pop right out.
Replaced a leaking seal a week ago and shaft took some attitude adjustment to pop out.

if you remove the cups you will need to replace the seals also .
the right side cup has a long shaft going through the engine sump . you can remove the axle by removing the large band on inner cv boot and hold the cup , pushing it to diff or sump will ensure it stays in place , pull out axle shaft with cv bearing attached. i think hayaku and generx did good diy with pics , if you search forum you should find diy . you will find a service manual very useful , available from Bentley Publishers Home *-* Bentley Publishers - Repair Manuals and Automotive Books . |

NOT necessary to replace the seal if it isn't leaking. Just be careful to not damage the lip on the seal when removing re-installing the shaft. Seal costs approx. $17 at $tealer.

Thank you all for answers.
If the seal is broken, do I have to change transmission oil? Is it easy to replace the seal? |

I don't think you going to find a broken seal, a leaking seal maybe.
If it is leaking I would just replace seal and replenish the fluid. Seal is easy to replace. Get this seal puller at your local HB ![]() and while there you may want to pick up the inexpensive seal driver kit or the cheaper route would be to, use a big enough socket, long extension combination over the seal and knock it on.

Thank you very much for all answers.
I'll try to swap whole axles. |

Also, when you pull the axle, does the diff fluid leak out?
