Cooling System

Hey guys,

I was wondering what info you had for me in terms of doing a cooling system overhaul.

Besides the radiator and hoses which I will be replacing what else should I take care of that is prone to failure?

Also are there any guides anywhere online? I can't find any and the DIY section on this website has no cooling system section (???).

I'm seriously thinking about purchasing the new Bentley manual, but in the mean time, I was wondering if someone could also help me out with scans of the cooling system or radiator replacement section out of the book if they have it. I want to use it to prepare for the job. I'm going home for spring break and will have 5 days to do this for my mom, so I'd like to start compiling a parts list and what the best prices are - which leads me to my final question.

Where can I find the best prices for these parts, as well as fast shipping. I need these parts by the beginning of next week.

Thanks a lot guys. If I end up doing it, I might make the much needed write-up for you guys to show my gratitude.

We need to know more. Like what year, engine, and mileage. As far as replacing items for preventative maintenence, you may want to wait until the radiator starts leaking as they are not prone to failure. The weak link in the cooling system is often the water pump, again depending on mileage. The belts and hoses are maintenence items.

I believe it has a cracked neck. We were told by the shop that it had to be replaced.

It's a 2000 4.4i and I think mileage is just north of 60k.

IMHO, the water pump/thermostat should also be on the agenda as it seems to give out between 60-80,000 - belts? - on the 4.4 engine, check two 25-30mm dia hoses behind the motor; if they feel soft & flexible (& thin), then they, too, should be replaced

weakest link is being a bmw cooling system lol
i'd do radiator, water pump(metal impeller), thermostat, expansion tank, and hoses (#1,2,3,8,9,10 in realoem diagram), heat exchanger o-rings, heat exchanger thermostat.
my upper hose blew up on me at WOT at 68k, radiator upper neck hairline crack developed at 72k....etc. etc.
all cooling system in the car is new now though

Are the BMW tools necessary for removing the fan? How could I counter hold the pulley while removing the fan clutch nut?

I should be ordering parts today. Thanks guys.
