16 mpg (Imperial) is about 17.7 litre/100 km. My 2003 3.0 automatic averaged 14.2 l/100 km in mixed (mostly city) driving, which is 20 mpg Imperial. I was able to get it to better than 10.5 litre/100 km on pure highway driving, which is 27 mpg Imperial. That did take a very careful throttle foot.
If you haven't done plugs and air filter yet you may want to do that, it could help somewhat. Having said that, you are only potentially going to gain 2 mpg in pure stop/start driving, if that. Watch out for the imperial vs US gallon comparisons, as my 20 mpg is 16.6 mpg US. Your 16 mpg imperial is 13.4 mpg US, a little low for a 3.0.

Normal, actually better then average for a 7 year old X5. New ones average between 17-18mpg.

I drive 27 miles (one way) to work. 1/4 of the trip consists of surface roads, and the rest consists of Highway travel (I-75 in/out of Atlanta) with stop and go traffic. I hit quite a bit of stop and go traffic.
I take it pretty easy on my X (04' 3.0i w/ Sport Pkg), and I'm getting about 20 mpg, and I'm able to drive 6 days on a tank of gas. I took a trip a few weekends back on the interstate the whole way (no traffic), and I got 23 mpg. I'm very happy w/ 20mpg, as my last truck got about 15/16 mpg. ![]() NOTE: My measurements are based on what the Board Computer (BC) is telling me... Best Regards!
