Stiff Steering Wheel

Hi! I am a new member at this site and I already learned a lot from you guys about my X5. I got my CPO 2006 3.0 Alpine White a week ago and I am happy with my decision to get it. I just noticed though that the steering wheel is stiff and a bit heavy when it's coming from stop compared to other SUVs that I drove, is it normal? Did anybody have this same concern before? Thanks!

Hi Blueagle, thanks for the welcome. I'll post the pics soon.

Mahmud5, I don't think my X comes with Servotronic. Is the heavy steering normal to X5 when parking and at very low speed?

Welcome! And to answer your question, yes, it's very normal for your steering to feel that way. Here are a couple of things that affect this...

- Wide tires - the wider, the heavier the steering & vice versa

- Tire pressure, the lower, the heavier the steering & vice versa

My advice would be to check your tire pressures first. You should be running at about 32psi all around, but you can increase it a bit to lighten up your steering if you'd like, but the ride will be a bit harsher as well. And what size tires are you running?

You say that it is stiffer then your other SUV, that is normal BMW is stiffer then most of the cars too, it gives you better control of the car in high speeds. If you had servotronic it would be softer when at parking speed.

I checked the tire pressure and it is already at 33psi in the front and rear tires. Well I guess I just have to get used to it.

The fact that the X5 is all-wheel drive all the time also make the steering feel a bit different than a standard SUV that normally operates in 2 wheel drive.
