Engine Rattle

Help needed!
Engine makes rattling noise at 2,500-3,000 rpm while speeding. Gaz number (91, 92) change makes difference in this sound intensity but little. Please advise. I'm tired of it. Gr-r-r-r

Is it like a bag of marbles being shaken or a knocking?

Check the obvious like oil level, check for a broken fan shroud, those things can make noise if cracked.

Marble sound can be a Vanos unit, cam bearing or lifter. Most often it's low oil.
Knocking is sometimes a bottom end problem but with such low miles I would not think thats the problem.

Changed oil and filter recently. No difference in before and after.

Most often it's low oil.
As I said, oil changing doesn't work, but gaz quality plays a very noticeable role. However, despite the best gaz using the sound becomes not so loud but still exist.
Knocking is sometimes a bottom end problem but with such low miles I would not think thats the problem.

Do you think it is coming from the intake valve are of the motor? I just picked mine up this morning after picking it up the day before for something another problem. On the way home on a stop light, I heard rattling noise. The minute I got home, I opend the hood and sure enough there is rattling noise.

I just picked up the X5 from the dealer this morning and they replaced the Disa Valve. They said if that is not replaced a pin comes lose and it rattles in the intake. If left alone, it will soon fall into the engine and destroy it.

I don't know if that's your case but might be work a try!

If you sayiing that a different octane gas makes a little difference you may want to check the ping/knock sensor - adjusts and prevents pinging.

Why not let the SO hold it on high idle and see if you can hear where the noise is coming from.

I've already thought of knock sensor though...
However, I've thought also of other possible causes kinda
1. chain tensioner
2. intake and exhaust VANOS worm gears and splined sprockets
3. cam bearing or lifter
4. oil level.....


Actually, the sound comes between 2,300 and 2,800 rpm while I'm pressing a gas pedal hard. I can avoid getting the damned sound pressing a pedal slightly, tenderly, but there is no X5 driving pleasure then...
I tried to hear sound with opened window, but the sound seems louder when a window closed. Also, the sound seems to be less intensive when a gas tank is half-empty.
While driving downhill I can press a pedal very hard but no sound, and when I drive uphill the sound comes at 2,300 rpm easily – from quite sound it gets louder and louder and it ends when a gear shifts to the next level and rpm comes to 2,000.. However, while on a plain road I can reveal this rattling sound by driving as a racer.


Any ideas appreciated.

Try Shell Premium gas, if it is available. Or maybe Chevron with Techron.
