I have the same sound on mine just recently. I tried the dealer and he said i'm overplaying it...that it is normal...now mind you, i've been to the dealer 4 times already in the month of april and maybe he's just giving me the cold shoulder since my car is still under warranty.

did you ever get this figured out E55AMG2?

the shudder? No...apparently thats torque being applied to the front wheels while the car is still and the wheel is being turned...and its "normal". Im not sure what steering system the 4.6 has, it feels like a rack and pinion. If it is, then the clicking is the play in the rack which you can do nothing about.

My 04 4.4 is making the clunk noise too. It happens when turning the steering wheel almost all the way when parked and when driving slowly, like when parking. I noticed it for awhile now and was planning to bring it to the dealer as well.

Anyone know the fix so we can avoid multiple visits to the dealer?

how about someone make a video of the clunk noise so that others can see if they have it too.

been to the dealer twice, the master technician even brought me inside the shop, tried at least 5 Xs, they all have that sound, even louder than my X, so that convinced me "that time" it was normal.

but then again, i think no sound is normal...

we've had this noise for the longest time. I replaced every suspension arm, ball joint, tie rod. this eliminated some of the noises but one still remained. a big f-ing clunk when we hit a driveway or turning at slow speeds.

our dealer actually found it at the steering shaft. they replaced it and ALL noises are gone!!!! I looked at the old one and there's a joint there. not like a U-joint but a joint of some sort.

I had the same problem with mine (3.0d 2002) around 90 000 km (56 000 miles). Especially when I turned on the left at low speed.

The dealer changed the steering box (taken under waranty ) and the noise is gone.

;o) Stf.

Clunks and clicks when moving slowly (parking) on close to full lock on my 2003 X5 sport 3.0d was the anti-roll (sway) bar moving sidways. I replace the mounting bushes (mounts to the chassis) cost in UK £25 for parts and about 1 hour labour. I have been told by an indepentant BMW service engineer that this is VERY common on X5's. If you get the noise when going over bumps then it is the sway bar links as well.
