Is it normal for X5's engine to make a roaring sound during acceleration

We purchased a 2004 x5 with 30K miles last month. During acceleration (pressing the gas pedal) the car makes a roaring noise from the engine. Compare to our sedan the engine noise is too loud. Is this normal?

thx,
Mohammad yamin north andover

can you further define or describe this roaring sound... its almost impossible to accurately answer your question and would only lend for subjective comments with no real value.

Some possibilities could be a hole in your airbox or exhaust piping, or exhaust. Are you referring to WOT or a gentle tap on the throttle?

You may want to check the fan clutch to make sure it isn't stuck.

It's funny. I thought the same thing. I came from a Honda Accord to an X5 4.4 and this thing roars. I wasn't sure if it was normal or not... still don't. I will get an inspection at an independent BMW shop next week.

Here is another post of a 4.4. I'm beginning to think the roaring sound is just the beast that we're driving.

To the OP: What engine? if it's a 3.0...you might have an issue. If its a 4.4 or 4.8, It has a v8, they make noise. Love it or go back to driving a grandpamobile

can someone post the sound of a "normal" 3.0 engine acceleration? maybe that would help us newbies figure out what the normal roar is... I have a 3.0 that roars and I thought it was just the nature of the beast but now that people are posting thinking this is a problem i'm worried!

Dealer convinced me that it is normal for the way that X5 combines air and fuel.
