Factory fit phone question ?

My 2001 4.4i has the factory fitted phone. I see it on the display menu and have the controls on the steering wheel. I believe that the origonal phone was a motorola "v" phone. The cradle is still fitted in the center console.

Can I buy a kit or an adapter to convert from the existing cable to fit a Nokia or any other make of phone. Seems a shame to rip out the fitted phone if I can use it.

I have the MkIV nav with 16.9 widescreen and CD changer.

Many Thanks

Bruce

I have the same phone. BMW told me that the v50 interface won't work for another make of phone so the whole thing needs to be replaced (not just the cradle). I have the v50 but don't even take it out of the car - I just divert incoming calls from my 6021 to the v50 when I'm in the car. The v50 handsets usually come up on ebay if you don't already have one. Any standard unlocked v50 will work including voice dialing from the multi function steering wheel but only the original BMW version will display incoming caller number/ID on the NAV screen.

Why not go for a bluetooth upgrade instead?

Just a note of caution, if you get a v50 without the BMW software it will almost certainly flatten your battery if left in the cradle for any length of time. (The BMW software for the v50 turns the phone off when the ignition is off).
This happened to me a couple of times.

Nice one Laurence I've been having a bit of bother with battery drain but didn't see any posts pointing to a non BMW phone I'll try keeping the phone disconnected when not in use and see if the battery keeps its charge.

Can the phone be upgraded to the BMW software? Is this available to download anywhere?

The software can't be downloaded but there is a company in the UK that will upgrade the phone with BMW software.
