Mine happens, too. I believe the compressor is freezing up, because if you turn off the "snowflake" and let it thaw out, the "snowflake" will once again work after a couple minutes of thawing.

Does sound like freezing up, but not the compressor, the evaporator (cooling part in the dash) As it operates it sweats moisture condensed from the air being blown through it, and if it gets too cold the condensed water can freeze on it and block airflow. This usually happens when the charge is just a cunt hair low as the low side pressure drops which lowers the temp.
