Tranny: Can you change out an auto for a manual?

If and/or when the tranny goes on my 2000 4.4, is it an option to replace it with a manual? I now have 107k and have kept up on the maintenance. Would it be worth it to consider the change?

Most likely that would quickly turn into an expensive nightmare. Between the physical mods and electronic mods involved you would be better just getting a reman tranny from a reputable local indy repair shop.

I also agree...It may be an option, but its not a simple swap. Aside from reconfiguring the pedal assembly, adding clutch cylinder and lines, looking for the interior shifter panel and linkage assembly, adding electrical wiring and sensors, and whatever else is involved with the swap, it may become a nightmare for you and the technician.

It's possible and not as difficult as you would think...my guys at VACMOTORSPORTS built a OneLap Racer/Cannonball Run car out of a 740iL with a speed manual...this 7 was a beast. I believe it was wrecked on the Autobahn after the owner took it over to Europe:

a 7-series is rwd. There's no V8 AWD (same gen) manual trans equipped vehicle in the BMW lineup. You'll have problems at the transfer case.

Not impossible though...where there is a will (and cash $$$) there is a way. Obviously custom fabrication would be required. I believed I asked VAC about this last year.

That's the obvious part of the swap.

I agree with most here that although it would be fun, it would be way more trouble and money than it is worth.

I honestly beg to differ....It may appear simple in thought and theory, but the actual work is not a walk in the park type of swap.

For a mechanical cripple like myself it would, in fact, be an impossibility but for a shop that specializes in custom fabrication there is no doubt in my mind that it could be done...JayPete1 instead of us throwing around possibilities just call VACMotorsports and pick their brains a little, if anyone would be able to do it I know they would...your X could be the prototype for all of us, I was actually interested in the same mod.
