UPDATE
While my friend was putting the valve covers back on an and doing an oil service on the car he took the oil filter off and the whole housing inside was smashed. It wasn't circulating properly.
He reckons that there is a breather or over flo of some description that goes right above the front cylinder in the engine. (he isnt an expert on these engines but knows a bit) Maybe the oil wasn't flowing properly and the engine was getting too much oil and it had to get rid of it??? If this is the problem then I will be sending a solicitors letter to the main dealers and will be claiming all my expenses etc back. The new oil filter housing was £150.00 on top of 2 garages inspecting the car and the labour for the gaskets to be fitted. I will keep you updated Cheers Mac |

What do you mean "smashed?" There is a BMW SIB detailing instances of some return parts in the oil filter housing that should then be replaced, but nothing about being smashed.

I mean in pieces! I will try and upload the picture for you. I dont know if the filter had been forced on but the top part of the swirling plastic centre was in bits and a part was still jammed in the filter.
I am replacing the housing tomorrow. Hopefully (fingers crossed) this is the problem. Mac |

I just looked. There is a vacuum port on the throttle body on the front right side of the engine. If oil is being sucked throught that hose it will go immediatly into the front driver side cylinder (UK Right side drive). I beleive that is the Crank Case Ventilation. If there is an oiling issue, such as the case filling with oil, it will pump out of the case through that port into your intake manifold. If you pull the air tube off the front of the throttle body you can open the butterfly valve and look into the manifold. If it is wet with oil you have your route of travel for the oil into the cylinder.
If the parts of your oil filter clogged the filter, the case could very well fill with oil; unfortunatly, it would be dirty oil. Have you noticed any strange readings on your oil dipstick?

any update on your issue
I know it has been a while but wanted to see if it was the valve stem seals. I am havinf the same issue minus the oil filter problem you had.

Steve, What Damage can overheating do? I don't know if my engine has been overheated previously, but it once overheat on me because belt went off due to tensioner fall-off. So I got message Check Temp and temp went to max, I pulled over and stopped in a seccond. I did drive with steering off for about 100meters though. I had Valve cover gaskets and timing gaskets changed a few weeks before. Now My problem is that I need 1Quart approx every 1k Miles. I get Misfire code Only when in cold, on 5,6 OR 1,2. I don't remember sorry. I suspect coil? I had oil on 2 Cylinders on pass side at the back of the engine before gasket change. I get a little smoke only when cold outside. I also am suspecting PCV valve and Oil Sep. and going to change those. Also weird, but I loose coolant ONLY after letting car sit for 2-3 days. Don't know where it goes since nothing is wet on the driveway. Car went on me once or twice for putting into gear right after start-up. No Idling. I use 10-60W Castrol Synthetic. Do theese symptoms come to anything? Thanks
