X5 vs. F150
Well, after 3 weeks of having my new tranny installed, this is what happened last Thursday. While waiting on vehicle three to four cars ahead of me to turn left, this F150 comes flying up behind me. When I noticed it in my rear view mirror, I knew there was no way it was going to stop in time. Luckily the lady did swerve some, but not quick enough. She caught about 2/3 of my rear end and spun me 90-degrees and she shot off to the side of the road. No one seriously hurt thank goodness. Once again, BMW proves its worthiness when it comes to safety.

Glad nobody was hurt!
The X5 is a tank. The rear of the X held up great for getting blasted by an F-150. I would have expected the damage to be much worse. The F-150 looks pretty messed up. By the way, I like your Georgia Bulldog license plate.

Just because the Ford is messed up does not mean the BMW is better, todays cars have crush zones to reduce impact, The Ford did what is was supposed to do.
Glad no one was hurt, and its to bad that the guy driving the 150 was jerk and rear-end you.

crumple zones doing what crumple zones do best....saving the passenger. Glad everyone was fine.

I could be wrong, but I don't think the F-150 has the same sort of crumple zones you are thinking about on a car. Trucks like that usually have solid steel frames that run the length of the vehicle. F-150's typically don't crumple like our Bimmers do, so to see that sort of damage to the F-150 surprised me a little.
...and by the way Blue, A) It was a woman driving the F-150 not a guy and B) you can' even compare the safety of an F-150 to an X5. Not even close. The X5 IS much safer (and better).

Notice that the compartment is fine, that is the goal of a crumple zone. See how the hood buckled, instead of being driven back into the windshield, the fender pushed outward, notice the badge being blown out.

If you look at those photos the only part of the truck that crumpled was the top half (hood and side fenders) which are just thin metal. Notice that the front bumper doesn't look pushed in at all. Like I said I am pretty sure the F-150 is a body on frame design where the solid box frame runs from the front bumper to the rear bumper. I am not sure how much that area can give. Now the area above the frame like the hood can crumple very easily depending on the angle of the accident. I do know that Ford made some changes in this design from the previous model though.

Dawg,
Glad everyone involved came out OK. Would be interested in seeing the total tally $$$ from the adjuster. And what you plan to do in terms of getting it fixed vs. taking the payout and gunning for a new X down payment I've been rear-ended twice in previous vehicles (Honda, Toyota), and it's alway super annoying how folks just do NOT pay attention to keeping their distance . They think Newtonian physics is for "other" people, it does not apply to them.Personally, I think aggressive tail-gating should be pursued by the cops much more vigorously than plain old speeding. FSETH, I'm not an expert either, but I would assume you're thinking of older models of the F-150. Nowadays, there are universal safety standards where all vehicles have to comply with the same basic crash test safety standards. If the crash test dummy in the F-150 "dies" at 35 mph because the truck did not crumple in front, Ford would have a problem on its hands. But then again, this IS the infamous Ford company. I believe half the case histories studied by 1st and 2nd year-law students are "Mr._______ vs. Ford Motor Company" .

x54.4blue - not sure what point you are trying to argue because no where did I say the X was "better". I just made the obvious point that the F150 sustained more damage than the X5.
StanF18 - repair quote without tearing it down was around $5000. I just sunk $4000 on a new tranny into it, so replacing it is not an option right now (not to mention I am still making payments on the vehicle). Also, this person was not tailgating. We had been stopped for a good 5-10 seconds before she nailed me. Just wasn't paying attention to the fact that we were stopped. Instead of replacing her, I am going to take the medical settlement and buy her a set of new wheels!!!
