Try this...article from this site ...
And, try the Search Tab in the future.

If it's an X related question, it's almost assuredly been

You're welcome...no need to panic. There is very little under the
sun, that hasn't been questioned & answered here on the amazing
Board, imo.

The Search Tab is not GOOG and not always as friendly or intuitive
as one might like. And, it takes some perusing of the threads that
do turn up. But, worth the look/search, imo.

I tried all both methods of reprogramming and the key still doesnt work... it wont even lock the door or unlock the door.. you think it needs to be recharged maybe... can i just leave it in the ignition and turn it to position 2... or 3... I drove the x to the store earlier today with the key that isnt working now.. and i almost got stuck at kaiser when the key didnt turn the car over.. but finally it started right up... so it sometimes works and sometimes it dont... but the other key works flawlesly... I think i use the other key more often than the one that dont work now...

okay i found a different method that worked and it fixed my key that was working and now the other key is partially working, just the unlock and lock features but when i use it to start the engine it wont work.. but the key that was working in the beginning is back to 100%..

here is the method i found that some else posted..

Lock the doors using the key not remote.
Do not open for a minute or so.
Open door using the key.
Put key into ignition and turn to Position 1 for a couple of seconds.
Turn ignition off and take key out.
Step outside the vehicle and close the door.
While holding down the unlock button on your remote, press the lock button 3 times.
The doors should lock then unlock.
That key is now programmed.
To set the other key, directly after setting the first key do the same procedure of holding the unlock button on the remote and press the lock button 3 times.
The doors should lock and unlock again.

It sounds to me like the chip that is recognized when starting the car (totaly diferent chip from unlocking and locking) is not recognized.
It can eather be broken, or neads to be reprogramed by dealer only
So take a trip to your local BMW i dont think that indy can help you with this one
