The X just died

I was accelerating to merge and the engine failsafe msg came on and the engine died.
I removed the key and tried to restart it.
It started but it stalls out whenever I let it idle.
So I can drive but I have to keep my foot on the gas at red lights so the engine wont die. The engine failsafe msg is no longer on but the check engine is.

Any ideas?

My 01' 4.4i did the exact same thing yesterday morning after driving through a school zone. 3.5 hours later, flatbed tow to my mechanic. Battery is dead now as well so they had to push it into the bay. Is it a software timebomb?
