Overhaling the transfer case or buy new?
A friend of mine experience some "clouncking" sound when putting the X5 in drive mode and in reverse. We checked it out and there seems to be some "play" when turning the axles in opposit directions. |

okay, i had to have a new transfer case installed 3 months back and from what i understand it is more expensive to overhaul a transfer case than to buy a refurbished one or one directly from a junk yard. in my case we waited 6 months to find one in good condition. i would reccomend buying a new one

I am interested to know more. How many miles? What engine? Severe use? Manual transmission? There must be an acceptable amount of play specified. Before cracking the case, make sure it's out of specification.

Somebody about 1-2 years ago posted the info from the actual manufacturer of the TC case and where to source them new for a lot less than $tealer prices.
I know a lot of the big rebuilder operations in the US offer a quality reman. for less than new with a reasonable warranty.
