Picture Request of Adaptive vs. Non Adaptive Headlight

Hey guys,

Well as you know I am in the process of a facelift. My problem is whether or not I can use adaptive headlights out of an 06 x5. I plan on using the harness provided by zulu95 but we are not sure if his harness will work on adpative headlights. If you guys have any pictures of the back side of a non adaptive headlight, please post them up. I am trying to determine whether the plugs are the same on both headlights, enabling me to use the harness for the facelift.

Here are the pics I have of the back side of the adaptive headlight.

Here is what the seller of this adaptive headlight told me : "I have taken the liberty of speaking with my dealer. He has told me that it will work, you just will not be able to aim the headlight because your car has manual aiming, not electronic. I have attached pictures of th bottom and the back of the headlight."

Thanks for your help guys!

Jay

You will still be able to aim your Adaptive headlights. It has the plastic turn-screws for adjusting vertical and horizontal aiming. I don't know anything about electronic aiming but I'm new to the X so ...

I would PM weasel as he probably could answer your question. I guess you're basically wondering if just supplying power to the adaptive HLs is enough to get the xenons to raise to the proper position (straight ahead instead of down). If that's so then I think you would be good to go. Hopefully the adaptive feature is only for moving left and right. You might want to ask weasel about the self-leveling too.

Yes to my understanding, the only difference is that the adaptive headlights have an additional plug to enable this feature. I would like to see pics of a comparison though.

Hmm .. I'm curious now to see the regular non-adaptive lights too. I didn't think there was a separate connector just for the adaptive on mine - just the regular harness.

If I'm not mistaken, the pics you're showing are underneath the adaptive HLs. Those are the connectors for the ballast (control unit) and ALC drive.

Can anyone verify if the harnesses are the same or if the adaptive headlight uses an additional harness?

I think I asked about this before on here and was told it wouldn't work...I might be wrong on that though.

Jay,

I double-checked my original adaptive headlights. There are no additional connectors - only the harness. I'm 100% positive. The adaptive must be wired in the harness and/or controlled by a module like the LCM near the glove compartment.

I remember seeing another thread with some headlights that were NOT adaptive (can't remember the year) but had a separate connector - for the self leveling.

I'm gonna search and see if I can find a pic of a non-adaptive bi-xenons anyways.

Thanks Jose. So does the adaptive also have a separate connector for the self leveling?

Nope. No other outside connectors besides the harness. BTW, did you see the wiring pin-out for the 04+ headlights on the homepage? Not sure if its the same for adaptive but look here:

Wiring layout:
  1. Turn Signal
  2. Ground
  3. Low Beam
  4. Ground
  5. Bi-Xenon
  6. High Beam
  7. Angel Eyes
  8. Aim Self leveling
  9. Aim Self leveling
  10. Aim Self leveling
  11. Aim Self leveling
  12. Unused
See 8 - 12. You might lose the self-leveling if your car does not have self-leveling originally. Like I said before, I would contact weasel as he's been very responsive to me and I'm sure he has the answers.

That self-leveling aiming must be what was meant by electronic aiming.

Hey guys.. Here are some pics of the adaptive control unit. I think I can just not have this plugged into the back of the headlight and everything should be fine?

What do you think?
