Running out of gas with before gauge shows empty

Hi there everyone. First off, as a newcomer to this board I just want to say thanks and good job to everyone on this site who has contributed to making this the place to be for X5 info. I have benefitted from it many times already.

I've got a peculiar problem with my '01 4.4i. I was driving across nevada shortly after purchasing it and I ran out of gas with the gauge showing a little more than 1/8 tank remaining. It was quite annoying being 4 miles from the town in which I planned to fill up and having to call a tow driver to bring a gas can (range on the digital readout was still at 73 mi. or something). With that, she started right up and I rolled into the little town, and after the gas can and the pump it was full with adding a little over 20 gallons?!?!...on a 25 gallon tank. What gives? Some type of problem I assume with the fuel pump or another part of the fuel delivery system, because from how much it took to fill I know there were at least a few gallons still in the tank. Has anyone seen anything like this before or have any ideas what could be going on?

there is a scavenger pump in the tank that pumps around 10litres of fuel in the reserve area to the fuel pump pickup. Could be either your scavenger pump has quit or a fuse has blown... I'd start looking here.

Good luck!
