Hitch towing capacity
Would this affect my shocks, springs, axle, etc...? Any big difference between OEM and Uhaul hitches? Thanks,

The 4.4i has self leveling air suspension, so that wouldn't be a problem. But there is a HUGE difference between the OEM hitch and ANY of the aftermarkets. I would not put that tongue weight on anything but the OEM hitch as all of the others are simply crap that will damage your vehicle with any tongue weight. There are nothing but horror stories from the aftermarket hitches, and most from just simple things like the basket for an icechest... OEM or nothing in my opinion!

with weasel56Do not recommend a non-OEM hitch and certainly not a versahaul or U-haul hitch. OEM hitch has 6000 lbs capacity and if you search this forum you will see members who have towed more than that with no issues on OEM hitch. Non-OEM hitches require you to make holes on the chasis which is a bad idea. OEM hitch comes with wiring harness which works well. |

We've discussed it before, and last time it was a Versa-Haul as well.
http://www.xoutpost.com/x5-e53-forum/...solutions.html Bottom line is, a trailer is a much safer bet than a hitch carrier. You are hanging the weight out farther than the hitch is designed to carry a load.

And don't forget that the factory hitch includes the wiring interface to plug into the factory harness, so no cutting up the harness. Factory or nothing. With the load I haul there's no way I'd take a chance with the aftermarket parts that just bolt to handy sheet metal, rather than the structural areas of the car.

While I agree that the OEM hitch is by far the best, and would want to use the BMW wiring harness, the OP may not have a choice. BMW's supplier of hitches in North America has gone out of business, and X5 owners are reporting that no dealer can get hitches, they are backordered until BMW can set up a new supplier. If you find one at a dealer, great. If not, you will need to go with an aftermarket hitch.
