Question Opinion needed regarding cv boot

New guy here, with first BMW ever. Love the ride and glad I bought it . 2002 3.0 AWD. Anyway I have the drivers side cv boot torn and was wondering if it would be OK to drive for a week or two if my warranty will not cover. Just bought it on Tuesday June 17 and I should have caught the issue but didnt. I was excited and just missed it. Car has 82000 miles and the mechanic I took it to for a look over said it was in exceptional condition except for the cv boot issue. What do you guys think?

Take it back immediately. The dealer will swear it's your problem if you don't. Plus you don't know how long it's been torn. They could've cleaned it up just to sell it. Don't take the risk...in fact, ask them to change the entire axle....Phil

Dealer said they would not fix because it was bought as is no warranty. Thats why I purchased a warranty through another company.

I would also agree that you would be able to drive it for a few weeks.... Is it the best thing.... NO, but in fact I put about 5k on my 03 a few summers ago with a torn boot, I knew that I was going to replace both boots and joints as soon as I shipped it back to the states and I didnt want to have to spend a mighty euro to fix it, so i just dealt with it... just my 2cts.....

I figured I would be able to, but being the first bimmer Ive owned I didnt know the severity of it. I know when my wifes accord cv joints went out they had a loud popping when you turned but this has yet to happen. thanks for the opinion.

Its very severe. Once dirt has entered the joint it will be destroyed. You need to replace both axles and boots. hope its under your warranty......could be a thousand or more to fix if you have a mechanic do it.

I drove with a torn cv boot about 2000 miles. change it 5-6 weeks ago and I don't see anything wrong with the axle or the new boot.

Like jst said, a torn boot isn't a big deal, but once dirt etc gets in there, the whole thing needs to be replaced. I'd replace it asap.

i concurm the sooner the better - if contaminated the joint will eventually fail. Tho i dont advocate it if you must be half ass and want to jerry rig it see the end of my write up here:
