New to X5 World

Hey everyone!! I am a newbie here and have some questions on the X5, I am new to the X5 but not BMW, I have a 1997 Dinan Supercharged M3.

Right now I also have a Land Rover Freelander, had it 2 yrs and it has been leaking antifreeze, they replaced the overflow tank and it still leaks, I am going in Weds to find out if it is a hose or worst case the head gasket, if it is the head gasket I will dump it, I am not paying $4k-$6k to get it repaired.

With that said I found a 2000 X5 4.4l 79k miles at a local Mercedes dealer, they are asking $16,450 and will give me $4500 trade for the LR, what should I look for in the X5, what are the common issues?

I already checked insurance rates, that is not a concern, tires will run about $800 from tirerack when needed and gas is not an issue, I get about 220 miles a tank in the LR, it is a 15 gal tank, so the BMW will do about the same or better.

2000 was a bmw in the making. Its too new to have worked out all the kinks. I would not recommend this purchase because of too many issues including a horrible cooling system on the e53 m62 engine. I have a 2001 for the past three years and there is always something I NEED to fix. If you can't buy an 04 or better than don't even waste your time. trust me

Thanks, I wish I could afford an 04. I don't know what else to do if the headgasket is gone, I don't want to sink money into the LR, and I am not buying a new SUV, I have to go used, this one was in the price range, I did drive it and it drives nice, but like you said there may be first year issues and I don't need a headache. Maybe some how I can get them to throw a warranty in for me.

:welcome: Just check the search engine here and the opening page. Plenty of info on most frequent problems.

Thanks, I really don't know what to search for as I don't know what the problems are for that model, I am hoping the memger can at least give me some idea and then I can search

i'd say NO for a 2000 X5. Perhaps 2002 and above since you can't afford 04.

$4500 for a trade on an '02 LR Freelander? Damn.

That price is waay to high for a 00 even with that many miles. If you want to skip the years with reliability issues, go to 03.

Find an independent mechanic and have the Freelander fixed. Headgasket fix should not cost half what you've listed
