Fan Blower quit...now it works. Why?

I had my 03 X 5 in idle for about 5 minutes, ran an errand. When came back, fan Blower had stopped. Moving the fan speed to max etc did not make it come back on.

Shut off the X 5 for about 30 minutes. When I came back, started the car and the fan now works.

Since it is under extended warranty, what should the dealer check? The obvious suspect is the Final Resistor, but that either goes off completely or works, right?

A failing final stage resistor can make the fan works erratically, some time on some time off with no apparent reason.

After reading most of these posts on vent fan issues, it sounds like my FSR is going on my 02 X5 as well. Here is the issue;

Both of these things have happened a few times so far.

With the a/c on auto the fan will be blowing really hard and then all of a sudden stop, then a few seconds later it will come back on as strong as before.

Also, after driving for a while and everything working fine, it will feel warm all of a sudden like the a/c turned off. Then if i turn up the fan speed manually everything will be OK.

Can anyone confirm FSR on this or should I look for something else. The X is still under warranty, but I woul dlike to have an idea of what is going on so when I take it to get repaired I can be as accurate as possible.

FSR. I've had to replace them on the X5 and 325. If you are a DIY'er check out Morristown. Best prices anywhere.

how do you clearly diagnose if the fan has a problem?

Usually, it would only active when temp is too high, so perhaps it does not need to run at all times...

I knew my fan was probably the issue because my X was baking in the sun for hours. When I started it up I immediately turned on the A/C to auto @ 68 degrees F on both sides. The fan ran for about 30 seconds, then stopped for about 10 seconds and then came back on a strong as before. I know the car was still way over 68 degrees when it cut off.

Also, the other time it quit working was after I had been driving for about 30 minutes with the A/C on, so the car was probably at the temp it should have been. However, I could tell that all of a sudden the car became more than a couple degrees warmed in a short amount of time, so I assumed it was the fan too. When I manually turned up the fan speed the temp came back down.

My car is still under an extended warranty, so I took it to the dealer. Here is what they found and replaced under warranty:

-first the obvious final stage resistor
-leaky high side service port

I was also hearing a groaning noise if I mashed the gas going about 55 mph and let off the gas quickly. They determined that the IHKA control unit was faulty. I am pretty sure it has something to do with the heating regulation.

All in all another $1,300 in warranty repairs, which brings my total to $6,000 +/- in warranty repairs in a year and a half of ownership and about 25,000 miles. Not so good. Needless to say the end of the warranty is nearing and I am starting to consider letting go of her shorty after.
