How much does it cost the dealer to get CPO on the X5?

CPO is an extended warranty program, that is all. The dealer can CPO a car or not, depending on market conditions and condition of car. It costs the dealer around 2 grand but is depenent on the mileage and age of the car. In order to get CPO, there is a checklist that a mechanic must go through to "certify" it, but really what is happening is BMW is making sure that they car doesn't immediately require repairs, so that they don't have to pay out a bunch of money at CPO inception.

That's the theory - the practice is usually more like what MD said in his post....a car wash and a quick look under the hood to see if anything is obviously falling off

Basically the car must be in identical condition to a new one besides the odometer.

There have been some dealerships in the past that certified non-eligible cars. Once NA found out, those dealerships were penalized pretty heavily so it's not just a quick wash and lookover.

Maybe the dealership you have experience with is like that but this really is the exception rather than the rule. They will check certain things like tire thread, have cursory look at the brakes etc. ..... 'no rocks or chips' or 'identical to a new one' is not the requirement.

For those of you looking to get a CPO, I wouldn't let this dissuade you because it is still an OEM warrany covered by the mother ship and is certainly better than riding bare back without a warranty - just don't think that a CPO car goes through the full checklist or 'guarantees' anything like the brochure would lead you to believe.

Issues and condition are two separate things.

Ask to see the technicians checklist on the particular vehicle you're looking at.

They Charged me like $2800 including dealer fees and Title/Lic, blah blah on my E90 which I had negotiated through a private party. I got free money on it though
