There are articles on the home page about how to install various brake controllers. It is a little different than a standard pickup truck, but not that complicated. The OEM hitch is rated for 6000 lbs, and I believe the tongue weight rating is 600 lbs (with the BMW drawbar). BMW doesn't recommend load levelling hitches, but some X5World members have done it successfully. Do a search for posts by withidl, he has the most experience with it.
