Mobil Oil 0w-40 and oil change Questions...

I have always been a Castrol oil man but after reading (searching here and on the web) that Castrol Synthetic oils are not "full Synthetic" in the States, so i am going to do the switch (hard to do...lol) for my X5. I went to Mobil's web site and read that Mobil 1 0w-40 http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/...l_1_0W-40.aspx (below was copied/paste from Mobil web site).

Mobil 1 0W-40 meets key industry and car builder specifications for:
  • Mercedes MB 229.5
  • BMW Longlife 01
  • Porsche Approval List 2002
  • VW 502.00/505.00/503.01
  • GM-LL-A-025 (gasoline)
  • GM-LL-B-025 (diesel)
  • ACEA A3, B3/B4
  • API SM/CF
I was wondering what does BMW Longlife 01 mean? Also will 0w-40 oil be good for temp that are below -20 F. I live up in MN and we do get weeks of -20 F (sometime not including windchills).

Oil Changes: Does anyone know were i can buy oil drain plug washers. Can i get them at the Dealer or any good BMW online stores (for air filters, and etc). On my 93 Range Rover i needed a crush washer but did not know if X5's had them or not.
Cheers,

You can also try the Lubro Molly oil which is a german product and the difference is $1.30 per quart more than the Mobil

I have heard that name but never knew anyone to use it. Is that brand hard to find?

The oil drain plug copper washer comes included with a oil filter. You may want to consider Amsoil 0W-30 as an alternate for your cold climate. http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/sso.aspx
Review the comparison.

M1 0W-40 and Amsoil are both good. Another option is German Castrol 0W-30. They're all great.

If you like Mobil1, (which I do), and I lived in MN,
I'd run 0W-30 in the 8 months of winter, (lol!),
and maybe 0W-40 in your 2 months of summer...

These oil brand/oil viscosity obsessed threads
are entertaining, but a search will bring you
literally dozens of pages of threads on the topic(s),
which contain years worth of good info and opinions.

Imo, the "crummiest" syn oil of today is so much
better than some of the "best" non-syn oil of
a decade ago, it hardly bears the arm wrestle or,
hand wringing.

. Debating amongst the best motor oils is like picking out different kinds of drinking water. They're all good. I think the 0W-40 viscosity is fine, perhaps 0W-30 a smidge better for very cold places.

There's no reason to choose a 0W-30 over 0W-40 for cold weather. The cold temp viscosity is represented in both by the 0. Both will have very similar characteristics when cold.

M1 0W-30 is an extremely thin oil, to the point of almost being a 20wt.
