I need to change mine too. Ive been getting alot of electrical issues including the trans fail safe program, and was told I need a 150 amp alternator, and that the 3.0 uses the 120 amp. i havent seen a 150 amp so im assuming I need the 140. i have the 4.4...2004 by the way.

Another thing you can do is remove the alternator and it has a serial number..or call BMW and give them your VIN number and have them tell you if you need a 90 or 120 amp alty. seems like it make take either.

I'm sure the owner's manual will tell you as well.

I personally have a 2004 3.0i and had to change out my alternator. The owners manual does not tell you anything about the amperage of the alternator. For reference, the one in my X5 was made by VALEO and was a 140A alternator. The Bosch 120A will fit but I wouldn't suggest using an alternator thats rated less than what you currently have.

what year is your vehicle? i think the prefacelift 3.0 uses 120amp. i had mine changed with the prostart (made by bosch) from pepboys and it worked just fine. $200 and labor was $150 at local gas station shop. good luck. and by the way, dealer quoted me $1300.
