TV On the move module- anybody got one?

Hi,

I`ve seen on ebay these TV on the move modules that allow the TV to be used whilst driving (yes I know it`s illegal but the kids would love it).

Has anybody installed on, if so is it easy and where do they install?

I have a 2003 X5 3.0d with 16:9 screen, sat nav etc.

Check this article for some links and installation of this DYI project:

ps. I suggest that if it is just for the kids, get some rear screens and run the TV output to the rear screens. That way you can disable the TV on the front nav screen while driving.

I already have rear screens installed which do have aux inputs. Is there a composite feed in the boot that I can tap in to? I have seen the 3.5inch jack sockets in the rear with outputs but didnt want to have to plug in to there and feed it in to the boot.

Thanks for your help.

If you already have the OEM TV tuner module installed in the boot, then you will have a composite video output coming from it that you can use to feed the rear screens. The bypass module will allow that video output to continue to display video on the nav screen while in motion.

Sorry to sound thick but - Is the composite output obvious or is it a case of tapping in to the cables? Also, do I need this tv on the move module to watch this feed too? I was under the impression that only the front screen was blocked whilst driving and not the whole composite output.

Thanks.

The composite output is obvious with the BMW OEM tuner. See the picture above, the input and output cables with female jacks are obvious and labeled, no splicing or tapping needed. For the unit I have, the only video that is blocked while in motion is the front Nav screen video which is not connected through the output cables (it is connected through the big wire harness). The bypass module fixes this. The video-out composite video feed is not blocked by motion.

The video output is used for rear screens or an overhead screen. If you are only interested in video on the rear screens, the bypass module is not mandatory. Without it, you will still have video on the Nav screen while sitting still. When you drive, the nav video will stop but the rear or overhead screens will continue to show video.

Excellent post thank you very much. That has cleared everything up now. Tomorrow I`m going to have a look for the connectors and hopefully hook the tv out to the rear screens.

Thanks again.

NCX:

good info, thanks

Hey, is it possible to order the OEM tuner module or would it be better going through TVonNav et al? I am primarily interested in having video in the headrests.

I am glad it was helpful. I have learned a LOT from the guys here and am always willing to give back when possible.

You can get the tuner module from the UK I'm sure. But I would get the 'kit' from one of the well-known places if you are interesting in nav-screen video.

Do you really NEED the OEM tuner? That depends on if you want 1). TV tuner capability, 2) easy reversing camera on nav capability, and/or 3) DVD video on the nav screen. You must have the a TV tuner module like the TVonNav or NavTV solution (OEM tuners) if you want easy FRONT screen integration (you could get video on the front screen without the tuner box but it is a huge pain in the a$$ compared to the PnP solutions like TVonNav, etc).

If you just want to play DVD's or XBOX, etc on the REAR headrests, and don't care about the front screen, you can save about $1000 and skip the tuner module. Some mobile DVD players now even have TV tuners built in. To do that you would just need two rear screens, a mobile DVD player, and the Aux input kit. Very inexpensive and very easy to install.

I went ahead with the TVonNav route for its ease of install, excellent OEM like cables, good integration with the nav and steering wheel controls, input for DVD or other video, and an input for the reverse cam. Then just added a cheap DVD player and aux-input kit.

If you really want to order just the OEM tuner and wiring I am sure someone here can help you gain the part numbers. But I don't think you will save much money and you won't have the luxury of having a PnP kit.
Hope that helps.

Yes Sir that is correct. Under the spare tire. Check the first two pictures on this link to get a good view of that area. (this was from installing the Aux-in kit in the rear instead of the glove-box) More Pics
