cv boot question?
Is this in fact true? as a local shop that specilizes on foreign cars said that is not true they replace them all the time and they can do the work for half the price. I know them to be an honest business as they have worked on my families members cars for over 30 years. Thanks!! |

My independent mechanic has replaced two boots for me. I don't know if a special tool is required or not, but my indie has definitely helped me out at a fraction of the cost of the dealership.
Plus he did this over a year ago and so far no locked up ABS....

"I have been told by the dealer that only they can do this work as only they have a special tool for this job and that the ABS has to be reprogramed with their software"
that shows how desperate they are to get money from people. Of course is bull. easy job if you have the tools. my indy shop asks $300 to replace a cv boot

Had a feeling it was bull and yes they are desperate I used to have to wait a week or two for an appointment when the car was UW. I guess this recession (ha deppression) is hitting them too. I am pretty good at my own repairs recently did all the brakes what do you think the cost of special tools (anything other than my regular tools) would be?
Thanks |

Does it make sense to treat the CV boots with something like armor-all to keep them from geting old and brittle, or are they best left alone?

If you only have to change them every 7 years, is it worth the extra effort. I think I is more of a time item than mileage. I changed the right axle assembly @ 125000 miles on my 2001 4.4 X5 this past March. The left was changed @ 100000 miles. No damage to the CV joint, just torn outer boots. I don't like to do things twice.
