how to check a serial number for previous car history?

i was wondering about this due to some minor details i noticed. My family purchased the 01 X5 in 2003. 6 months ago i purchased it from my dad, and ive noticed some minor flaws, the right side of the front bumper isnt as aligned as it should be, alsothe space between the front passenger door and right side of the body in that gap it is white it is not very noticeable unless you check closely, my left side is black inside the gap and ive checked other x5s and the part of the door visible in the gap is also black.

anyway i can check the serial?

Technically it's called a VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). Go to www.carfax.com and order a vehicle history report for $25. You'll need the VIN and a credit card.
