1st oil change in my 2001 3.0i X5

I just changed the oil and the oil filter today and man that oil filter was dirty. The X5 (dodi) is new to me and i bought it in June from the local bimmer deal. The PO took very good care of the X and it even had the window sticker in the owners manual. I wonder when the last oil change was..

I read in the owners manaul that the 2001 3.0i X5 takes 6.9 qts (6.5 liters). I read Hayuku's report (great job!!!) and he states everything in liters (maybe he typed wrong and meant qts). He writes that he added 7.5 liters at the end and i added 7.5 qts to my X5 and seems to be at the full mark. Will that be ok to go over .5 qts. When i read his report i thought he was talking in qts so i did not think that 7.5 qts was not to much and then i re-read the manual and it states 6.9 qts.

7.5 Liters = 7.9251615791188765 Quarts. I think Hayuku must have meant qts besides liters or he would have added 8.0qts to his 3.0i. Also he states: "I ended up using 7.5 liters like the manual stated" I am not trying to dis him or anything and thought he did a great job!! I am just a light lost and hope the .5 qts that i went over will not damage my engine, i dont think so but this is my 1st bimmer.

I just went to pick up my daughter at daycare and drove ~5 miles and then let the X sit a couple mins after i turned off the engine. I checked the dipstick and it was at the 1/2 full mark after adding 7.5 qts?? Maybe i will wait to add more and will check it again after i go shopping tonight (get more miles on it).

Would this kind of oil filter (that soaks in ~1qts) give out a false measurment on the dipstick when you 1st do a oil change?

7.9 qts with filter...I've dripped a full 8 qts in, every time.

If you read the manual, you mis-read on the "6.9 qts."

From the manual on the front page of this site:
Capacities...
"Engine oil and filter change quarts (liters) 7.9 (7.5) – BMW X5 3.0i"

If you want to know the "history", done by any stlr, have your key
run at any dlr, as I've suggested before.

PS...you posted your question in the X3 forum...

PS...you posted your question in the X3 forum...
I just noticed that i put it in the wrong section. Can some move it?

I read in my "owners manual for the vehicle" (printed in Munich 2000) for the 3.0i and 4.4i page 199 states 6.9 qts/6.5 liters w/ filter change for 3.0i and 8.5 qts 8.0 liters w/ filter change for the 4.4i (i have it in my hand right now).
I just went to the home page and you were right about those numbers above and it is on page 209, 2001 X5 manual. Weird, i wonder why my owners manual that i got w/ the X has those numbers??? This owners manual came w/ the X and even had the window sticker w/ all the options. Which one should i trust and even the dealer tech said it took 7.0 qts...

When i bought the X i had the dealer look up the history and she took it in for everything, even light bulb changes. Then she went to a indy bimmer shop around (after the warr. was over) here but i have not found it yet. I was thinking about writing to her and asking were she went....

I also called the bimmer dealer and talked to a tech and he said the X5 2001 3.0i will hold 7 qts...

SCAN OF MY OWNERS MANUAL (PAPER)

I just scanned in my owners manual page 199 and printed in 2000.

See i was not mis-reading anything wrong and i did not have any beer at the time...LOL I was going by the manual that i got w/ the X5 and what a bimmer tech told me...

I did not ever think i would see 2 sets of numbers for the amount of oil w/ filter in a car! I wonder if they wrote the manuals during Okt. feast...LOL

If you look at the numbers a couple are the same as the ones on the home page and some are off by .1....

I wasn't accusing you, I simply thought you had mis-read it...
My manual says 7.9 qts w/filter; I've done the oil change with
8 qts many times over its 7 yr history. Last fall I had a good Indie
in Asheville do the oil change, along with some brake work: he too
uses 8 qts.

No idea for the discrepancy...I can understand a typo in a 2000 manual;
I don't understand your dlr "tech", though short fills at stlrs are common,
imo.
Use whatcha like...

Oil pumps up into the head and takes a while to come back down to the pan. Check oil after sitting overnight, it will come back up a little.

Thanks David and i was not upset w/ you. One thing i hate about the forums is no face to face talk... It's all good and if you have been gettting 8qts for 7 yrs then i trust you more then the tech at the dealer. I would not pass it by the dlr to do short fills and also when i did my oil change i think they must have not changed the filter and only drained the oil out of the pan.
I was just more worried that i over filled the oil and it looks like i did not. My wife went out for a drive so i will check it again and top off w/ the .5 qts if needed.

The manual most have been typed up during Okt. Feast (fall '00).....

Cheers,

Don't get too hung up on the printed numbers as it is just an approximation. Just fill it up until you get the proper reading on the dipstick. The fill will vary based on a multitude of factors. For example, when I do my own oil change, I only jack up the driver side and let the oil drain completely for approx. 15 to 20 minutes while I do other tasks (change the filter, etc). Doing this way, I've consistently refilled with 8.5qts until it reach the full mark on my 3.0i. When my indy does it (raising the entire car to drain), He only refills it with 8.0qts to reach the full mark.
