I've just read the thread about converting Halogens to Xenon. I bought this kit from that Fishcake dude from eBay. The HID Xenons are preinstalled in the headlamp assembly. So my question is, when I send my car off to get these babies installed, do I need to ask the auto electricians to install a relay so that the computer doesn't spit out errors? They told me they've never done an X5 installation of this sort before and its gotten me a little worried. Are these relays a simple thing most auto electricians should know about? What should I do...? H E L P BTW, here's the direct link to the auction. ![]() http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...271439121&rd=1 |

when I switched from halogen to xenon in my old E36 w/bc the xenon kit was wired through a relay, and I DID have a check control message for headlights out. What it was is that the relay taked soo little amperage to activate that the car didn't see the amperage draw from the headlights. I proceded to test the amperage draw from the relay to the xenon control unit, and compared it to the amperage draw to the original halogens, believe it or not, the xenons drew less power than the halogens! So I made a quick connecting harness from terminals bought at the local auto parts store, removed the relay and powered the xenon control modules directly from the headlight harness at each headlight. And whatdoyaknow? the check control messages were gone, and even better, the system was now actively monitoring the xenon headlights for failure as well.
If I were you I would feel more comfortable either doing it myself or finding someone with previous experience with BMW's rather than let someone who has never worked with one do it... just make sure he's competent and confident... and will warranty anything he might screw up.

Oh and another thing...how can I tell if my original halogen headlamps are self levelling? What does the plug look like? Coz the guy I bought the headlamps off tells me that there should be a plug that goes straight into the headlamp assembly. If it ain't there then I can't have this feature...dammit...I should've checked beofre I bought it...
