Unhappy Car Problems

This past week, my 2001 3.0 X5 was broken into via smashing the driver's front window. A local auto glass repair shop was able to replace both the window as well as the regulator within the door (that was broken when the window was shattered). Unfortunately, after the repair, I now find that:

1) the automatic one-touch window raise no longer works and I have to hold the window button to close the window

2) I can no longer close my passenger front window; the window lowered with the one-touch press but upon lifting the button to raise the window, you can hear the motor/regulator in the door working but the window does not raise higher than being flush with the door frame; if you try to lower the window, you see the window only move down ~ 1/2 an inch.

If anyone has any similar experience with this situation, I would be very grateful.

Sounds like the repairs were not done properly.

I agree that it sounds like the passengers side is not installed properly... but it sounds like the drivers side anti-trap just needs to be reinitialized.

While running with the doors closed, hold the switch fully up for about 2 seconds after the window reaches the top, then fully down for 2 seconds after the window reaches the bottom, then back to the top for another 2 seconds after closed. And be sure to hold it at the second layer of the 2 stage switch in each direction as you do this. That should re-enable the one touch up on the drivers door.

The only other thing I would check is that they didn't cut open your vapor barriers when they did the windows. The gray foam seal across the inside of the door opening under the panel needs to be carefully removed and properly sealed when reinstalled or you can get water inside your truck when it rains. You'd be amazed at the number of shops that don't know this and butcher the darn things... causing wet carpets...

Thank you both for your replies. I had to call the glass repairmen again to look at the car. I don't think that they fiddled around with the glass, but who knows? From what I was told, one of the clips holding the passenger front window in place broke and caused the glass to shift to the right which moved it off track. Everytime an attempt was made to raise the window, it would get stuck on a portion of the window track and after doing this multiple times, it caused the regulator clip to break off from the tension wire that raises the window (or so I was told). They fixed the window after buying another regulator kit from BMW and after they were completely done, everything was working fine, including the one-touch window raise on the driver's side. They did not charge me any extra labor only parts. All in all, I probably saved more money using them than bringing it to the BMW dealer to have the window replaced but who knows? Thanks again for your input.
