check engine oil level

Hi guys I did a search and I didn't find the exact answer i needed. I got the check engine oil level message today. Then i turned the truck off and on and it went away. I was in a hurry so I didn't get time to check the oil very well but I did check it quickly and it seemed fine. Is it just a faulty sensor or something to be worried about. Apologies if it was already asked before and that my search was not as good but any help would be great. Thanks!

I would check it because last thing you wanna do is seize your engine. Any leaks under the car? Sometimes by the time check oil light comes on it's usually too late. Either way I wouldn't take a chance on it b/c it's easy to check and if you have to add oil thats easy too.

the dipstick never lies...it might be the sensor...I have the same problem currently...but mine is due to the fact that I changed my engine...and since that engine was unused for so long the sensor got messed up...

as we350z said...if there are no leaks...and the dipstick level is normal then u need a sensor...I got quated on one for $145...not sure tho...

I just checked the oil again and everything seems fine. Also the message didn't come back on so it must all be good. If I do need a sensor warranty will cover it. I'm going in on thursday to get my tranny changed anyway so might just get sensor replaced. thanks for the help guys!

It only has 21, 747 miles. I took it in to get it checked and they simply said we will put in a new tranny. I'm kind of upset this is happening already but at least I'm under warranty. The problem was pretty minor as well. I asked to test drive another x5 they might ahve the dealer to see if it was just my X5 but they said I can't. So I have no choice left. I'm going in this thursday to get it changed.

I occasionally get the intermittent oil light coming on in my E46 and it's usually close to around the time I need to get an oil change. Per my SA, it just means that the oil level is getting lower and needs to be topped up a bit.

I don't know how accurate what he told me is but it does usually coincide with about 2k to 4k miles left to be driven before an oil change.

Also.... this is for my E46 and and that may differ slightly from your X..... just wanted to give a heads up in case

I got my oil changed just a while ago. I'm pretty sure I'm not due for and oil change yet. The oil seemed fine when i checked it twice at different times. I think the sensor just screwed up that one time.
