Maintenance History

How do I go about aquiring a maintenance history for my vehicle? Can I simply show up at any BMW service desk with my key and ask for a printout?

nope, they could give it to you, but they arent very eager to do so. they technically aren't supposed to.. get friendly with a SA and see if you can get one

You would have to get permission from the former owner...CarFax should give you the owner's info and then do your best dick tracy work, That's what I did and the previous owner of my X faxed a letter to his old dealer who then released the service history to me...the dealer inserts your key into their little machine and up pops the history of your ride.

What's really on my mind is can you really trust the dealer when you take your vehicle in because the indicator light tells you to have service soon and they tell you oil service was performed a month before you purchased this vehicle, for instance? The vehicle is still under the free mainenance program.

Have them check the SIA data to see if it is due for service at the dealer, or go to another one and have them service it. If the bars are yellow or red they should pretty much service it. However, if you want to give them the benefit of the doubt, checking the SIA data will tell them how much fuel has gone through the system since it was last reset, unless they didn't reset the data (which it sounds like they may not have if they really serviced it), it should tell them when it is time for service.

Or just do the oil service yourself and get the indicator reset for safe measure, is a good way to get to know your car.

And the dealer can get all the more details, stories, etc. for all the work done at that location, but to look up the full service history for all work done at any BMW locations only gives you the labor op codes the ticket is booked under with no details... and technically is labeled a "confidential document not to be shared with any third party" stamped in red across the top of the page.

What year is your X?
