Engine swap: X5 4.6 or 4.8 into a 2003 540

I did a search first but couldn't find what I was looking for.

I have an '03 540 that has a cracked cylinder head. Rather than drop $3500 to fix it, I am starting to think about an engine swap. A couple of my friends are telling me to swap my 4.4 with a 4.6 or 4.8 out of an X5.

They are thinking it's plug & play, that all of the electronics and plumbing are the same. My car has the Dinan S3 package, though, so I'm assuming I'll need new software.

Anyone know of someone that's done this? Any advice, suggestions, etc?

04+ 4.4/4.8 motors have VANOS and they might have different harnesses and ECUs...

So I should focus on an '03 or earlier? They didn't make these bigger versions right away, did they?

4.6 was 02-03, 4.8 is 2004-present

My car is the newer 540 that has VANOS, so can I assume either the 4.4 or 4.6 will work?

Weasel will become famous soon enough
All the X5 engines have dual/quad vanos, what he meant was valvetronic. Thats the variable valve lift system. The 4.4 and 4.6 are the same block, just the 4.6 is a punched out version. (4.4i=M62, 4.6is=M62tu)

Since you have the last year of the E39, you already have the 4.4... here's a snip from wiki. "The 2003 540 M-Sport is the highest overall performance BMW ever made with an automatic transmission as it had the same 4.4 liter M62 V8 as the 740i, 740Li, but in the smaller body."

So if you wanted to upgrade it would be the 4.6is, which would give you about 50 or so horsepower gain... but if you are at Dinan stage 3 already, you are probably at that horsepower already. So the difference would be what the Dinan stage 3 parts would do for the 4.6is motor. For parts and software compatibility, I would maybe ask the people at dinan directly. They may be able to shed some light on it for you. But if it all works out, it would be KILLA!!!
